Operating Rules

The Desalination Plant has the operational flexibility to shutdown if water from the Desalination Plant is no longer required for Sydney’s water security needs.

The NSW Metropolitan Water Plan established the Operating Rules for the Sydney Desalination Plant. These Operating Rules are also contained in Sydney Desalination Plant’s Network Operator’s Licence. Visit the NSW Government’s website for more information about the Metropolitan Water Plan.

In summary, the plant will be in Water Security Mode (not in production) until the dam levels fall below 60%. At this time the plant will begin the restart process and will then continue to operate until the dam levels rise above 70% when the plant will be directed to cease production.
